chapter five

Cole flexed his fingers and heard every knuckle pop. He knew what anger felt like but at that moment, cold fury was washing aside every other emotion as it flooded his brain.

“You sent my sister through the portal?”

“Get a grip, Somerton; did you think the battle was going to be won without sacrifice?”

Cole looked at major Rinehart and kept his jaw tightly controlled. The hairs on the back of his neck tingled as the major’s eyes looked at him with some kind of twisted enjoyment.

“You should have kept them from seeing your own family. You knew what they were doing on our planet.” There was a snort of disgust from Rinehart before he turned and walked away. Cole stared at the man’s back as he tried to make sense of the encounter. He never would have guessed that the major held any dislike for the Alcandians. Tonight, there wasn’t anything but resentment filling the major’s head. Cole considered the feeling as he moved towards the wormhole. Questions spun to mind as he noticed more sentries in place than before.

That tingle on his neck became a full attack of gut instinct. Something wasn’t right but he stepped forward instead of investigating because the major was right about one thing.

It was his sister over there now.

Her body actually hurt.
